Compost Tumbler Reviews
Compost tumblers are a specific type of composting equipment. There are
several different types of composting bins and styles. For example a traditional
way of composting is to simply build a square frame enclosed with chicken wire
that you toss your garden waste in. It’s a great way to compost, however, you
still need to turn or rotate the compost for it to rot evenly and make nice
humace. This requires the gardener to turn the heavy, smelly, rotting materials
manually with a pitch fork. Usually, I am of the belief that simpler gardening
equipment is better- with the exception of composting. If a gardener has already
make the smart choice to compost and to purchase a composter- I whole heartedly
recommend the tumbler type composters. Let the machine do the work for you!
Before I review the actual compost tumblers, this is why we think the “tumbler”
type composter is best.
Benefits of Tumbler type Composter
On a stand which is easier for most people to use, instead of bending over to
add composting materials and or harvest compost.
- Have a handle to turn the compost to mix materials.
- Enclosed drum so the compost is not going to attract rodents and other
animals looking for lunch. The enclosed drums also keep the liquid (compost
tea) within the mixture so its not leaking and smelling up your patio if the
composter is near your kitchen.
- Available in different sizes for different sized yards.
- Portable. Unlike a compost pile- once you start it that’s where it
stays. A compost tumbler is portable to different areas of your yard for
easy use to load in the compost materials and to unload the humace.
Compact Compost Tumbler
Compact compost tumblers were designed for small to medium sized
gardens. Ideally for smaller yards compost bins are large enough to hold
all the composting materials from the kitchen and lawn cuttings but not
so large that they take up too much space. An average size for a
compact compost tumbler is about 43 x 42 x 33 and has an attached drum
that sits about 12 inches off the ground. Compact compost tumblers
usually have about a 90 gallon capacity that will turn a hot pile into
black composted humus in about two weeks.
Why do you want a compact compost tumbler that has a drum that sits off the ground?
The compact compost tumblers that have enclosed drums off
the ground are less likely to have rats and mice in them.
They also make the aeration process much easier by turning
the drum instead of shoveling with a pitchfork.
Most compact compost tumblers come in green, black, or metal
color and have a manufacturers warranty.
Composting is quickly becoming the new "hip" thing to do
again (not that us die hard gardeners ever stopped
composting). In an effort to live more eco friendly
lifestyles people with all sized yards are trying to compost
garden and lawn cuttings and kitchen scraps. Compact
compost tumblers make it easy to live greener lifestyles.
