St. Fiacre Garden StatueSt. Fiacre is the patron saint of gardners. The as a boy in Ireland, he was raised in a monastery where he received a wide variety of education, including herbalism. As an adult living in Paris, Fiacre asked a Bishop for help establishing a hermitage from which he grew food for all who came to visit.

When his small piece of land could not produce enough food for all who came by to see him, Fiacre went back to the Bishop and asked for more land. The bishop told Fiacre he could have as much land as his spade could enclose in one day. Fiacre returned to the land and marked a huge perimeter with his spade. That night he prayed to God for help and when he awoke, all of the land within the marked area was tilled, stones removed and large trees felled. When the Bishop arrived that day to see what land Fiacre was able to spade and saw the miracle, Fiacre was named a saint.

Saint Fiacre went on to work that land as a medicinal garden, as a vegetable garden and fruit and nut garden to share. Sick would pilgrimage to his gardens seeing healing.
