The Beauty of Low Voltage Outdoor Lighting

Allison Ray

by Allison Ray

Enhance your environment with low voltage outdoor lighting. Installing outdoor lighting is safe and easy to achieve. Outdoor lighting will emphasize a home’s outdoor features by improving the landscape or to provide a safety feature to a business or homeowner. Low voltage lighting are environmentally friendly because they use less energy, which means they add value to commercial or home landscapes.

Outdoor low voltage lighting fixtures are customized to suit any lifestyle. Illuminate garden pathways, dramatize its unique structure, light up dark sides of buildings for security. Motion sensitive control features will help keep uninvited persons or animals from approaching unexpectedly, all while conserving energy. Additional security features include automatic timers, that control outdoor lights to turn off and on at specific times, so if no one is home, no one else will know it.

Designed Lighting

Create the perfect lighting scheme with individualized ornamental light designs that take the form of sculptures, adding a story land ambiance to gardens. Additional designs come in the form of outdoor rock lights that buttress the landscape. Decorative garden and landscape lighting are manufactured in a variety of soft lighting auras and artful looking styles:

o Path lighting
o Accent lighting
o Deck lighting
o Well or pond lighting
o Hanging lighting
o Wall lighting

Focusing beams of light are achieved through cylinder, bullet and squared shaped lights. Mini lights placed under steps, benches or railings gives a romantic atmosphere to porches, patios, or gazebos for outdoor evening activities, both in homes and office buildings. Low voltage lighting produces a light wrap effect or the lighting can be directed to extend outward to fill in the intended areas with balance and soft nuance. When placing outdoor fixtures, make sure that they will not create a white glare to disrupt local traffic or annoy the neighbors.

Low Voltage Systems and Kits:

Low voltage systems in 12 volts are the more popular and is considered the standard for landscape lighting. Low voltage fixtures are easy to install because its cables can be laid on the ground in a shallow depression or placed just below the surface without fear of accidental electrocution to children or animals. Moving low voltage fixtures is accomplished easily when landscape changes are needed. Transformers that are a necessary part of outdoor lighting, converts a 120 house voltage to an economical 12 volt wattage. Transformers come in different shapes and sizes to add up to the wattage of all the lights planned for. Select a transformer that matches as closely as possible, the total lamp wattage, i.e., if you have 8 outdoor lamps at 20 watts each, you will need a 180 or 200 watt transformer (8×20=160). Transformer wattage should be larger than what you actually need so that additional lighting ornaments can be added or changed in the future. Normally, transformers come in from 150 wattage to 900 wattage.

Buying and Installing DIY Lighting Kits

Creating a natural lighting landscape is the aim of homeowners and businesses, but which requires careful and thoughtful planning. DIY outdoor lighting kits provide an exciting weekend project.

Kits range in prices from $20 to $300 and over, but all kits are expandable. By keeping with the lower price kits, to begin with, you can more easily purchase additional kits if needed to change or increase outdoor lighting preferences.

Lower priced prepackaged kits come equipped with different components, mainly consisting of the transformer, cables and fixtures.

Higher end kits include path lights, spot accent lights with watt bulbs and a low voltage transformer with a photocell component and a timer, cables, lead wire, extended life light bulbs with weather resistant sockets.
Start outdoor lighting by mapping out a design of the home, remembering that less is more.

Lights should balance out the landscape and not over power it, so experiment with the arrangements.
Low voltage outside lighting means lights used outdoors will go through wear and tear.

Sticking with a budget to account for these future changes are a frugal way to always enjoy the landscape lighting experience.
