Motion Sensor Outdoor Lighting

Allison Ray

by Allison Ray

Would you like to able to activate your outdoor lighting without the touch of a remote control button? Would you like to have a light come on when you approach a door to your home- without leaving the light “on” 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Well, thanks to advanced technology in recent decades, you can. You can actually activate or turn on your outdoor lighting just by passing by it or coming near it. This is what is known as motion sensor lighting. Motion sensor lighting is not a new concept; it has been around for decades. What is new about it, are all the different types of motion sensor lighting that are available to illuminate your home, office, or even your garden.

How motion sensor outdoor lighting works

Basically, there are outdoor lights that are installed near the person’s home that gives off a special light (or sensor) that is only sensitive to motion, or bodily movement. Whenever someone or something passes through the sensor, lights are automatically activated. Depending on the light and settings, the light will automatically shut off immediately or when programmed in has passed.

Why motion sensor lights are the most popular outdoor lighting solution

1. Many are also opting for this type of lighting because it’s a lot cheaper than having to pay hundreds of dollars for light bills. The lights only comes on when it is needed and automatically goes off when it is no longer in use.

2. One less thing to remember in our already overburdened lives…You do not have to remember to always leave the light on.

3. Motion sensor lighting is popular among seniors who are perhaps immobile, or because of having to deal with arthritic pains, they may find it difficult even to turn on a light. it can also be excellent for those who are physically challenged, such as people in wheelchairs or the bedridden, or those who cannot physically moved unless they are assisted by someone. Of course, one does not have to be elderly or helpless to utilize such a device. Some may want to purchase a motion sensor lighting device just because they want the convenience of not having to always get up and turn off the front porch lights or having to use a remote control device to close the garage door.
Using motion sensor lights for safety and security
Security Benefits-Motion sensor outdoor lighting can be an ideal device in protection from thieves, burglars, and vandals. Since many criminals are looking for the protection of darkness- light can be a very good deterrent. They don’t necessarily know whether the homeowner turned on the light or is it an automatic light. Either way it can shock or surprise such predators, alerting the homeowner and sometimes neighbors that a unwanted intruder is present.

Safety Benefits- Outdoor light can be used in creative ways to provide light for driveways, walkways, garage doors, front/back doors, patio, gazebo, yard, garden and so on. They can make it a lot easier to navigate late at night or early in the morning when the sun is not out yet. Chances of tripping or falling down a lit path to a front door are a lot less then trying to “make it” in the pitch black darkness.

How much does it cost for such a system to be installed?

It depends on the system- I know you hate to hear that. (Just give me a price..right.) Our best advise for accurate instillation costs are to:

1. Choose a make and model of lighting that you know you definitely want.

2. Look on the box. Know this sounds silly, but many companies provide suggestions for how their products should be used. It may be something that you could do yourself. Some solar lights (my personal favorite) do not need to be hard wired into your building so they are super easy and affordable to install. If they need to be hard wired in, hiring a contractor can get expensive.

Ways to use motion sensor lights

Homeowners commonly use motion sensor lights to illuminate front doors, back doors and walkways. Here are some creative ways that motion sensor lights can be used.

Light up your front porch

Give your home more curb appeal and make visitors feel welcome by installing a motion sensor light that points to or is located on your porch. This is especially important if you have steps that lead to your front door.

Walkway or Path Spot Lights

Walkway or path spot lights not only enhance the beauty of your home, but also make walking to or from it easier and safer. By having motion sensor lights along pathways you can help people find your front door easier and also alert you if someone is unexpectedly coming down the path uninvited. Most people think of security as protecting humans from humans- but you also want to be aware if a large animal is approaching you home if you keep smaller animals as pets outside.

Deck Lighting

Great for safety and ambiance.

But there can be no question that the motion sensor light has become the wave of the future with many homeowners. Perhaps in the near future there will be many more new homeowners that will see the “light” of this truly amazing device.
