Herbs for ADHD
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is a condition marked by
frequent forgetfulness and
excessive talking. Other signs include concentrating problems, impaired
judgement and short attention span. According to researches, ADHD is caused by
failure of coordination in the reticular activating system of the brain which is
the same area responsible for the responses of the external stimulus.
For individuals supressing this disorder, conventional treatment such as psycho
stimulant and anti-
depressant drugs are used. However, excessive use of anti-depressant and other
stimulants may cause lethargy and depression.
It is very fortunate that there is an alternative approach in treating ADHD.
These alternative or natural treatments can balance the chemistry of the brain
without having side effects on medication. There are a lot of herbs for ADHD
that can be used to treat this disorder. You can even find some of them readily
available in your own backyard without even realizing their curing effects.
Herbs for ADHD include:
Gingko Biloba, Scuttelaria or Skullcap, German Chamomile, Gotu Kola, Oatstraw,
Rooibos, Lemon Balm, Valerian, Lobelia and Hawthorn.
Gingko Biloba is a popular choice known to treat the disorder because
it is highly available in the market today. It is entirely easy to find and
gives a lot of benefits especially to the nervous and respiratory system. Many
people find these herbs entirely helpful in treating the disorder without
fearing the side effects like that from medicated drugs.
Another herb used to treat ADHD is the Scuttelaria or the Skullcap. It
focuses in soothing the nervous system by calming the nerves of the brain. An
individual with ADHD taking this herb will find it easier to process thoughts
and can focus more on tasks which require full attention.
German Chamomile is a good alternative medicine to treat the disorder
as well. It promotes relaxation and provides the mind with overall calmness.
Recently, the Gotu Kola has been added to the list of effective
alternative medicines
to treat ADHD. Studies have proven that it promotes long retention of
information to patients with this disorder.
Oatstraw has been proven to aid conditions of getting easily distracted.
This is because this herb has sedative properties that can make a person calm.
It does not have any side effects making it entirely healthy to take.
Rooibos is also known to treat ADHD and strengthens the child’s
tolerance to allergy
causing foods. Lemon Balm can also treat ADHD without any side effects. It
reduces stress and anxiety as well as to promote a sense of calmness to those
having this disorder.
Valerian is an herbal root supplement believed to increase chemical in
the brain with the calmness it brings. Another herb that can be used to treat
this disorder is Lobelia. It is one of the most useful herbs that create
systematic relaxants in every patient having this disorder. Lastly, Hawthorn is
known to aid children with focus inabilities.
There some things to be considered in taking herbs for ADHD which include
avoiding sugar. It has been proven that sugar intake triggers aggressive
behavior and restlessness since children with this disorder cannot digest sugar
properties. A person with this disorder must also bask in sunlight to avoid
getting another disorder called SAD be misdiagnosed as ADHD.
